Traditional Weddings Customs: Russian Brides

Wedding ceremonies are different in every country you visit. The customs in Egypt won’t be the same as the ones in China. This is an accepted truth no matter where you go so it is easy to understand why some people may want to learn how things may be different for them. Here are some customs Russian brides need to know for traditions sake.

In a Russian wedding the titles of best man and maid of honor are changed slightly. Instead these people are called witnesses, or “svideteli”. The celebration of a marital joining frequently lasts for at least two days but can go on for longer.

One thing that remains the same is prep time. Preparation for a traditional Russian marriage can run anywhere from one month to six months. The registration happens in a public place. For Americans it is usually a courthouse. In Russia they call these departments of public service “Zags”.

As a symbol for hopeful longevity, health, and prosperity the new couple is given gifts of bread and salt. These are more than just food. They are the one of the ways for the older generation to bless the new couple.

When the couple is given these gifts they are expected to take as big a bite as they can. This is much like in America where we take the first bites of wedding cake. Only, with Russian tradition the individual who takes the biggest bite of this special bread is considered to be the head of the household.

Much like within the United States traditional Russian weddings have toasts. A toast is when a close friend or family member of either the bride or groom stands up before everyone and shares a word or two of blessing an encouragement. Everyone drinks afterwards.

In a traditional Russian wedding after the toasted is made the glasses are thrown on the ground. It is believe to be an omen of good luck when the glass shatters on impact. But if the pieces of the glass draw blood from anyone standing around this can be a sign of bad luck. It’s a lesson for the newlyweds as well. You always have to take care.

Krazha Nevesty means “stealing the bride”. This is just what you think it would be. It is one of the most interesting customs within the traditional Russian wedding. The bride can be snatched up if the groom is not paying close attention to her!

During the wedding celebrations friends and family members of the groom will often set up elaborate schemes in order to snatch his beloved. He has to stay on his toes! If he loses his bride he is then forced to pay a ransom for her return.

There are a great many things you have to remember if you are planning to join the growing group of Russian brides. Above all the rest, though, you have to keep in mind that you are about to get married. This should be one of the happiest days of your life no matter how you celebrate it. So get out there and be happy.
