People have been the subject of various prize-winning photographs from time to time. Portrait photography deals with depicting a person or a group with all their unique characteristics.
A well done portrait photograph doesn’t follow convention, and presents the subject in a mental state that makes the picture distinctive. However, these photographs are also done in the conventional style with one person or the whole family as subjects, and these often end up in family albums.
The most significant aspect in a portrait image is the close up, and the face of the subject must come out sharply in it. This can be done by adjusting camera settings to obscure the subject’s background so that his or her face gets optimum focus. This job of focussing the face becomes simpler with a camera having a wide aperture. However, in some portraits where the individual wants to be seen as part of the background, especially in photographs taken out in the open, a standard aperture serves the purpose better.
Lack of ideal light for a good image is a usual issue faced by the photographers. But an impressive portrait photograph is simpler to take if certain ground rules are followed. If the individual is made to sit by a window in a posture in which the sun’s rays fall only partly on the face, then the photograph usually ends up looking wonderful. The remaining part of the face can be lighted up by making use of a reflective object like a white piece of sheet or board. However, Studio lighting can also be tuned to suit the light requirements for high quality portrait photographs, and thus a lot of photographers seek to shoot such photographs within the confines of studios.
The last but possibly the most significant aspect of portrait photography is to ensure that the subject feels at home. If the subject doesn’t feel comfortable while being clicked and doesn’t give a natural expression, then even the highest quality camera and lighting technology can not ensure a good portrait.
